On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) 2009-2010

Interview On Campus!

On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) enables you to interview on campus with various employers offering a wide range of career opportunities. Our recent recruiters included over 100 nonprofit, government, and for-profit organizations, including several Fortune 500 companies. Typically, large employers with regular hiring needs use OCR to fill their vacancies.

To participate in OCR, create an account in GWork, our online recruiting system. (GWork allows you to manage your job search activities and OCR scheduling 24/7.) Then, take the mandatory 15-minute online OCR Orientation (the link is located in the GWork Announcements section), which will give you all the information you need to successfully prepare for OCR jobs, apply to them, and schedule your on-campus interviews. After viewing the orientation, there is a short quiz to take. Once you pass the quiz (you'll need to answer eight of the ten questions correctly), we will grant you access to the program. Interviews take place in either Old Main (corner of 20th and F) or Duques Hall (corner of 22nd and G).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
OCR Policies & Codes of Conduct

GW Student & Alumni Honor Code

Candidates will provide up-to-date, accurate, and truthful information about themselves in their resumes, cover letters, transcripts, and GWork profile page. Falsifying information is a violation of the University’s Code of Academic Integrity. Candidates who falsify their information and misrepresent themselves will lose access to the OCR program.

OCR Program Policies for Students/Alumni

Resume Submission Policy

Candidates will apply only for positions in which they have a genuine interest. Once the resume withdraw deadline has passed in GWork, candidates who are chosen for an interview are required to sign up for an interview time. Candidates who must withdraw their resume after the resume withdraw deadline will contact OCR immediately.

Cancellation Policy

Candidates are strongly discouraged from cancelling interviews for any reason. If a candidate must cancel an interview due to illness, emergency, or acceptance of another job offer, he/she must notify OCR employer partnerships staff at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled interview. Failure to do so will result in the candidate’s GWork account being “blocked,” prohibiting the candidate from further participation in the OCR program. Students are permitted two (2) cancellations per interview season before being “blocked.” Again, candidates are strongly discouraged from cancelling interviews for any reason. Chronic offenders risk the chance of being “blocked” completely from the program.

No-Show Policy

Candidates who do not appear for/keep a scheduled interview (“no-show”) and do not inform the OCR staff of such will have their GWork account blocked, thereby prohibiting further participation in the OCR program. To appeal a “block” in GWork, the candidate must call the OCR office to schedule an appointment to discuss the situation.

Offer/Acceptance Policy

Candidates will communicate acceptance or refusal of a job offer to employers as promptly as possible, so the employer can notify other candidates that they are still being considered or that the position is filled. When accepting an offer, the candidate should have every intention of honoring that commitment. Accepting an offer only as a precautionary measure is misleading to the employer and may restrict opportunities for others who are genuinely interested in that employer. Candidates have a responsibility to withdraw from the recruiting process after accepting an offer of employment.

Candidates will notify the OCR staff of an acceptance of an offer from an employer so they can be withdrawn from the program. Students will share all offers with OCR staff, even if offers were not accepted.

Student Honor Code

Candidates will provide up-to-date, accurate, and truthful information about themselves in their resumes, cover letters, transcripts, and GWork profile page. Falsifying information is a violation of the University’s Code of Academic Integrity. Candidates who falsify their information and misrepresent themselves will lose access to the OCR program.

Dress Code

Candidates are required to wear professional business attire for all on-campus interviews. For questions regarding professional business attire, please contact OCR staff.

How do I access the required OCR Orientation that I need to take to get access to OCR in GWork?

The link to the OCR orientation is located on the left side of your GWork profile page, under the announcement for On-Campus Recruiting Orientation. Click the link that says "Click here to view online orientation." This Orientation will walk you through the process of getting access to OCR and how the program works. At the end of the Orientation video, there is a quiz that must be finished to get access to the program.

How do I access the required OCR Quiz?

The OCR quiz is part of the OCR Orientation and is at the end of the instructional video.

What if I take the quiz and do not pass (less than 8 of 10 correct)?

If you take the quiz and miss more than two of the ten questions, you may retake the quiz one more time. Each time you take the quiz, your score is automatically sent to the OCR Staff. If we see that you are having problems, we will contact you. If you need help with the quiz, call us at 202-994-8633.

I can’t seem to login to Gwork, what can I do?

If you can’t login to GWork because you have forgotten your password, click the password reset button. If this doesn’t solve your problem, call 202.994.8633 or email gworkhlp@gwu.edu and we will help you.

I took the OCR Orientation on Friday afternoon and now it’s Sunday and I still don’t have access! The application deadline is tonight, what do I do?

Access is given manually during business hours Monday through Friday. It will take the OCR Staff 24-48 hours during the business week to grant you access. Resume deadlines are posted on the GWork calendar and in the Career Center well ahead of time. Do not let OCR orientation be a last minute thing! It can take up to 48 hours to get OCR access and this may jeopardize your ability to apply for a job with an immediate deadline.

Why do I not see any jobs when I search under “OCR Positions I qualify for” under the Jobs tab?

Employers can specify GPA required, major, graduation date, and degree level required for their positions. If you do not meet their requirements, GWork will not let you apply. If you think this is an error, please call 202.994.8633 for help. If it is the beginning of the semester, it may be that employers have not added their recruiting positions yet.

How do I upload my transcript into GWork, if the job for which I’m applying requires me to do so?

You can get an unofficial transcript by logging in to your GWeb account.  Login using your GWID and password. From there, click on the Student Records and Registration Menu. Next, click on Student Records Information Menu. Finally, click on Transcripts and you will see your unofficial transcript. To upload this unofficial form into GWork, you must convert it to a pdf. Once you save the converted file to your desktop, you can upload the document into GWork just like you upload your resume and cover letter. If you still cannot upload your transcript, call us at 202.994.8633.

I’ve applied for an OCR job, now what should I do?

Check your status on GWork by clicking on the OCR tab at the top of your homepage. Once you are in OCR, you will need to click on the “interview requests” tab to view the status of your application. If you have already scheduled an interview, you will need to click on “scheduled interviews” to view the time and place of your interview, as well as to reschedule or cancel the interview in the system.

What does it mean when my interview status says “pending?”

This means the employer has not selected applicants yet. Be patient and this status will change shortly to either “invited,” “alternate,” or “not invited.”

What does it mean when my interview status says “alternate?”

This means you have been selected to interview as an alternate. That is, if the pre-selected students do not sign up during the first sign-up period, you will have an opportunity to sign up on the second sign-up date and take any open spot. Be aware when alternate sign-up dates and times occur—you maximize your chances of getting an interview (should timeslots still be available). As an alternate, you are not guaranteed an interview slot.

I’ve been invited to interview, now what?

If you don’t already see a “schedule interview” button under the status in “interview requests,” you will see this soon. Since everyone gets a fair chance at scheduling interview times, you may have to wait a few days until the employer’s selection deadline passes. Once “schedule interview” appears, click it and on a first-come, first-served basis you will be able to select a time that is available.

What do I do if I can’t make the interview?

It is requested that you carefully review the strict cancellation & no-show policy for OCR! It is understood that you will attend all scheduled interviews, which are scheduled anytime between 9am and 5pm. You are allowed two legitimate interview absences—sicknesses, flight delays, family responsibilities, religious holidays, and similar events. Inform us as early as you can about conflicts. By applying for the position, you are stating that you are available should the employer select you! Keep in mind that these are actual professional employment interviews, thus, it is extremely unprofessional and unacceptable to simply not show up for an interview without contacting the Career Center.

How do I prepare for my first interview?

Career Center staff can help you improve your interview skills. Call for an appointment (202.994.6495), or come by during walk-in hours (Mon-Fri, 10am-12pm & 1-5 pm), when you can meet with one of our career consultants to discuss mock interviews, have your resume critiqued, or ask related interview preparation questions. You can also find various resources and sample interview questions on the Career Center website.

What can I do to learn more about the company with which I'll be interviewing?

Often companies dedicate a portion of their website to interested applicants. Peruse this information and find out as much as possible about the potential position before interviewing. Visit the Career Center to discuss different companies with specialized career consultants who can help answer your questions. Some employers conduct information sessions on campus the week before OCR interviews, sending their company representatives to provide brief presentations about their organizations. Attending these is a great opportunity to learn more and get your questions answered! Go to the GWork calendar to search for employer information sessions.

What is expected of me in an interview?

Employers expect the following from you:

  • Professional Dress: Dress professionally for your interview. An interview suit is expected.
  • Preparation: Come with an extra resumes! Be prepared with questions for the recruiter. Read about the company beforehand and have a sense of the company culture, expectations, available positions, etc.
  • Timely Arrival: Arrive 10-15 minutes before your interview time. Alert an OCR Staff person of your arrival when you get to your interview location.
  • Smoking: Do not smoke before your interview, not even in the car.   Nonsmokers are particularly sensitive to the smell of smoke on a person's clothing, etc., and it could detract from your interview.
  • Thank-You Notes: Send a thank-you note to your interviewer no later than 48 hours after your interview. Sample thank-you letters can be found online and through the Career Center.
  • Cell Phone Courtesy: Turn off your phone. Employers are not to be interrupted during an interview by your cell phone ringing. Be courteous and turn it off beforehand!
